The company makes devices that detect light and radiation, including photodiodes, photo detectors, and optoelectronic assemblies, which are used by manufacturers in analysis and imaging equipment for applications ranging from missile guidance and satellite positioning to baggage scanning and blood analysis. API's large-area avalanche photodiodes (LAAPDs) are used to sense low levels of light and radiation. Its FILTRODE technology applies optical coatings to photodiode chips to filter out bright background light. About 25% of its sales are to federal government contractors. In mid-2015 API merged with Luna Innovations.
